Postgres `docker-compose`

A shorthand reference for creating docker-compose.yaml entry to create postgres container. This is for postgres14

  postgres:
    image: postgres:14-alpine
    ports:
      - "5431:5432"
    volumes:
      - pgdata:/var/lib/postgresql/data
    environment:
      - POSTGRES_PASSWORD=VERYSECRETFORMULA
      - POSTGRES_USER=howling-user
      - POSTGRES_DB=howling-db
volumes:
  pgdata:

Need to know :

POSTGRES_USER will create the user but with no access to default postgres database
POSTGRES_DB will create the database but with no extensions enabled.

In case you want to add init script, like in case you want to enable extensions to non-default database :

Create init script. In this case, init SQL file

-- Enables extension for using uuid_generate_v4()
CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS "uuid-ossp";

Add it to entrypoint entry through volume binding.

    volumes:
      - pgdata:/var/lib/postgresql/data
      - ./scripts/psql_init.sql:/docker-entrypoint-initdb.d/psql_init.sql
